Soul Music by Terry Pratchett

This is a story about drugs, sex…and music with rocks in it. Actually, it’s only about the music, but one out of three ain’t bad, right?

Imp Y Celyn (aka Buddy) is a young musician with a dream to bring the finest music to the Discworld. Along with horn-playing dwarf Glod Glodsson, troll drummer Lias “Cliff” Bluestone, and a bit of magic, the trio develop a brand of music that takes the Discworld by storm. They are “The Band with Rocks In,” and few are immune to their hypnotic charm.

Meanwhile, Death is having trouble forgetting…anything, and it bothers him. Leaving his post as the Grim Reaper, Death goes on a quest to find the best way to forget things, which includes heavy drinking and a stint in the Klatchian foreign legion.

The job of harvesting souls falls upon the unwilling shoulders of Susan Sto Helit, Death’s granddaughter. With the help of Quoth the Raven and the Death of Rats (the rodent version of the Grim Reaper), Susan gets on-the-job training in the family business.

A hilarious parody of the birth of rock and roll, music fans will undoubtedly get a kick out of the satire, puns and sly references to various bands and events in rock history. Equally humorous are Death’s vain attempts to become a little more…human.
