Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

A young woman is swept off into marriage by the older widower, Maxim de Winter, and taken to his beautiful English country estate, Manderly. However, almost immediately, she has to live under the shadow of Rebecca, the former Mrs. de Winter. Everyone seems to have adored Rebecca, especially by Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper, and her ne’er-do-well cousin.

As the young woman slowly gains confidence in her new role as lady of the estate, she begins to discover that Rebecca was more than what she seemed. Maxim, himself, is also hiding a dark secret from his new bride. The current Mrs. de Winter wants to get to the bottom of these mysteries, but to do so may jeopardize her husband, as well as the Manderly estate.

I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did! This was one of those classics that I had planned to get around to reading, but it was never very high on my to-read list. Recently, though, my girlfriend and I agreed to read it together, and I was not disappointed. The main character was someone to really root for, and the way the book comes to an end is amazing! Lots of twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting.
