Old Man Fookwire is a grump who doesn’t like anything…except birds. Throughout the summer he spends his days painting the birds that come to visit. “There [are] whirley birds and bonga birds, baba birds and yaba birds. Even a rare floogle bird [comes] by once or twice.”

When the fall arrives, Fookwire is sad because his feathered friends will soon be flying south for the winter, unless…Quickly, he builds a number of beautiful birdfeeders, providing the birds the food they need to stay through the cold weather. The plan is working perfectly, until:

“Those darn squirrels!”

A group of super-smart squirrels manage to empty all of the birdfeeders. It is soon a battle of wits as Old Man Fookwire makes the birdfeeders harder and harder to get at, while the squirrels find new and inventive ways to reach the food.
